European Union ministers have set a renewable energy target at 40%

The EU energy Minister agreed on June 27 to increase the European share of energy consumption from renewable sources such as solar or wind to 40% by 2030.

Green Europe

The legally binding target previously set at 32% is part of the EU's ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 from the benchmark volume recorded in 1990.

This will pave the way for achieving net zero carbon emissions in Europe by 2050.

The meeting of energy ministers in Luxembourg also agreed that total energy consumption in the EU would fall by at least 9% by 2030, compared to 2020.

France's energy transition minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher welcomed the agreement, which will now be negotiated with the European Parliament, which has not yet finalized its target position.

These goals " will also help us reduce our dependence on Russian energy in the context of the war in Ukraine."
